Crinolines —also known as guardainfantes or miriñaques— were structural frames worn under skirts to add volume, gaining popularity in the 15th century. They could be harmful to the feminized bodies wearing them, as their cage-like shape imposed a dangerous restriction on movement. However, contemporary accounts by women speak of the sense of safety and protection provided by the distance the structure created between their bodies and others.
This led me to conceive the crinoline as a shield or armor for preserving personal space. In this way, I approach these structures as potential frameworks for reclaiming and occupying spaces that are diminished or denied to femininity. I reimagine it as a thorny rosebush that can bloom.
