Born with the Fate of a Rose reimagines the archetype of the medieval knight from a queer and non-binary perspective. Juxtaposing the narratives of Magical Girl and Shōjo manga with the recovery of warrior maidens from Castilian and Charro folklore, the exhibition presents a panoply of fragile body armor. This repertoire of suits of armor, rather than shielding the vulnerability of the body, exalts and ornaments it, assembling a distinct transtemporal aesthetic.

The combination of materials across different temporalities and natures (rapidly decomposing biomaterials articulated with metallic structures) generates tensions between the ephemeral and the durable, the soft and the structural, inviting us to return to the skin to reconsider the role of the delicate and the brittle. Through materiality, the exhibition explores how to displace and transform the closed meanings associated with historical attire. From crinolines to traditional Charro jewelry converted into defensive weapons, Arévalo opens up possibilities through hinges, eyelets, keys, and doors, tearing open different garments and objects to grant them new meanings.
